Hello Friends,

Mark your calendar! Don’t miss another incredible ‘watershed’ moment in the history of Mt Tam mountain bike access with the upcoming MMWD meeting. For the first time since 1984 - when bikes were banned from all Tam singletrack - trails are being opened. Access4Bikes was formed in 1999 to fight bike citations and the prohibition of bikes on Tam trails, we are about to see concrete results of 25 years of work!

OK, so you may be just a little disappointed that only 10% of the 65 miles of system trails on Tam are being considered within this Pilot Project. We get it, it feels like a long fight with so much more to go, but that is the truth.

Here’s why we will attend the MMWD Board Meeting on September 3rd to CELEBRATE the efforts that got us here today:

  1. Class 1 eBikes will finally be treated like other mountain bikes and be allowed anywhere they are allowed during this pilot period.

  2. The 10% of the trails in the projects are what staff has the capacity to implement at this time. The pilots will be closely monitored for environmental conditions, mountain biker’s compliance, and any potential user conflicts. A4B reps have sat down and discussed the future with MMWD staff and it is bright! We agree that this program has the best chance of success, and with success, we’ll be able to work on getting more trails open to our users down the trail - er, road.

Come to the meeting and learn the details for yourself; show your respect to those who are working hard at this stage of a long fight.

Lastly, during this pilot period we ask that you, the mountain bike community, show up at your best; use exemplary manners and compliance with all watershed rules and regulations. Yes, this includes not poaching. We need to show the nay-sayers - all the people in our community who have kept us off of trails - that we belong there. We believe this pilot project will work and when people can see that opening more trails to bikes will not cause the sky to fall, it means even more opportunities in the future!

With your support, this will only be the beginning of legalizing bikes on trails.

Thank you and we’ll see you on the trails!
